Adobe Prelude is probably best described as a footage organiser. Due to the fact that — in the digital era — footage is being shot on different types of cameras, each with their own formats, it’s important (especially on larger projects) to organise the footage before even starting with the edit.

For example, a reality show may be using 3 HD cameras plus various GoPro cameras. Their footage is all stored on solid state cards, which is then transferred onto hard drives for editing. There may be hours and hours of footage, for a simple half-hour program. Maybe two of the HD cameras are Panasonic and one is a Sony, or one could be a DSLR. Possibly the audio has been recorded on a digital deck.

So before the editor even starts to look at all the footage, it would need to be converted to a common format* that is compatible with the editing software, and ‘synched up’ — i.e. lined up so all the concurrent angles and sound are grouped together. The director and/or producer may also want to go through the footage to write notes for the editor of what they think is important in terms of the final edit… because they may be on location the next day while the editor is cutting the scenes.

In the case of a feature film, the director can view his footage without tying up the editor and edit suite, and carefully select his preferred takes of each scene. An assistant editor can then go through the footage and notes, and create a rough edit or ‘assembly’.

With Adobe Prelude software, one can perform multiple functions at the same time and use the program to create video projects and edit a raw clip that includes large quantities of videos and media files. Adobe Prelude can also be used to create rough cuts and markers in the basic editing sequence and these rough cuts and markers can also be exported to other video editing programs.

This has a special Logging feature which helps the user to create subdivisions of the clip and even add temporary markers. This feature can also be used to import and export the data files and upload the same using Creative Cloud. The program can also ingest and rename media clips and perform data to the files.

Adobe Prelude has great compatibility with Adobe Premiere Pro and the videos can be transferred to the program without any hassle and wastage of time. The interface of Adobe Prelude is user-friendly and efficient and easier to use. The user can even use Adobe Prelude to provide a hyperlink to the media files and copy the same to another destination or convert it to another file format.

Adobe Prelude is said to be a successor of Adobe OnLocation, and Adobe OnLocation has been permanently shut down. The features of Adobe OnLocation have been transferred to Adobe Prelude.
